About instance ID
assignment
When you configure the Instance ID setting, you specify a numeric value for
the instance, in the range of 1 to 255. The reason that instance names must be numeric is to
handle the requirement that all cooperating bridges agree on the assignment of VLANs to instance
IDs. Using numeric values instead of names makes this requirement easier to manage.
