Tasks
Additional information
Re-activate the BIG-IQ licenses.
You must reactive the license on each BIG-IQ in the HA configuration. For specific instructions about how to reactivate a license, refer to the
F5 BIG-IQ® Central Management: Licensing and Initial Setup
guide.
Re-activate the BIG-IQ licenses.
You must reactive the license for each data collection device in the cluster. For specific instructions about how to reactivate a license, refer to the
F5 BIG-IQ® Central Management: Licensing and Initial Setup
guide.
Create a backup of the user configuration set (UCS) for the devices in the DCD cluster's and store it on a remote server.
The UCS file includes: system-specific configuration files, license, user account and password information, and SSL certificates and keys. You can use this backup in the event you want to restore to a previous software version.
Decide which disk volume you want to install the BIG-IQ software on. You must have at least two volumes to upgrade BIG-IQ.
If you don't have two volumes, you can add the second volume as part of the upgrade.
Decide which disk volume you want to install the BIG-IQ software on. You must have at least two volumes to upgrade BIG-IQ.
If the BIG-IQ you are upgrading doesn't have two volumes, you must create one using a
CLI
command. The upgrade task provides options for either case.
Deploy any staged configuration changes to your managed BIG-IP devices.
When addressing configuration conflicts for each BIG-IP device, F5 recommends you use BIG-IP to override the configuration settings stored on BIG-IQ.
Required information
For my configuration
You'll need to create a passphrase for the Master Key. The passphrase must contain:
  • At least 16 characters
  • At least 1 capital letter
  • At least 1 lower case letter
  • At least 1 number
  • At least 1 special character
You must use the same Master Key Passphrase for each BIG-IQ in an HA pair and every device in a DCD cluster. The upgrade will complete without it, but the BIG-IQ HA or DCD configuration will not function if the pass phrases don't match.
Get the discovery address you specified on the BIG-IQ during setup. This is the same IP address that the peers in a high availability confirmation use to communicate. You can find this IP address on the BIG-IQ HA screen.
Get your BIG-IQ administrator and root passwords.
Get the name for the each BIG-IQ in an HA configuration.

BIG-IQ without a data collection device cluster

Upgrading BIG-IQ from Version 5.4 through 7.0.0
This example represents a BIG-IQ in a high availability configuration. During the upgrade, the BIG-IQ suspends BIG-IP device management. This can result in a downtime of services. The amount of downtime depends on the size of your system's setup. BIG-IQ services resume when the active BIG-IQ is upgraded and restarted.

BIG-IQ with a data collection device cluster

Upgrading BIG-IQ with a Data Collection Device Cluster from Version 5.4.0 through 7.0
This example represents a BIG-IQ a high-availability (HA) configuration with a data collection device (DCD) cluster. During the upgrade, all devices in the DCD cluster are deactivated until they are all upgraded. Data collection from the managed BIG-IP devices resumes only after all devices in the DCD cluster are upgraded and restarted.

BIG-IQ includes a data collection device cluster with minimal downtime

Upgrading BIG-IQ with a Data Collection Device Cluster from with Minimal Downtime
This figure represents BIG-IQ in a high-availability (HA) configuration with a data collection device (DCD) cluster. The DCD cluster continues to collect data until you start the upgrade process. Data collection for all BIG-IP devices continues as one DCD at a time is upgraded and restarted. For this example, there are three data collection devices: one has already completed the upgrade to version
7.1.0
, one is undergoing an upgrade to version
7.1.0
, and one is collecting data but still using the pre-upgrade version.
This upgrade procedure with minimal downtime supports BIG-IQ configuration that include a minimum of three data collection devices.
