Serial Console Connection

About establishing a serial console connection

In the event that network access is impaired or not yet configured, the serial console might be the only way to access your system.
You should perform all F5 software installations and upgrades using the serial console, as these procedures require reboots, in which network connectivity is lost temporarily.
Additionally, you should connect to the console to run End-User Diagnostics (EUD) tests.
End-User Diagnostics (EUD) is available only on BIG-IP and VIPRION systems.

Configure a serial connection to a BIG-IP/VIPRION system

Depending on which BIG-IP/VIPRION system you have, you can use either the supplied RJ45 to DB9 console port cable or the RJ45F to RJ45M rolled serial adapter to connect the system to a serial console server.
  1. Connect the system to a serial console server using one of these options:
    • Connect the RJ45 to DB9 console port or serial console cable supplied by F5 to the CONSOLE port on the system.
The default serial port settings are 19200, n, 8, 1.
    • Connect the system to a serial console server with a standard CAT5 cable by connecting the RJ45F to RJ45M rolled serial adapter to the CONSOLE port. Then you can connect the CAT5 cable to the adapter. The adapter provides the appropriate pinout connection to your equipment. For information about cable and connector pinout specifications, see
      F5 Platforms: Accessories
      at techdocs.f5.com/en-us/hw-platforms/f5-plat-accessories.html.
  2. Connect the console port cable from the system to a management workstation or console server.

Configure a serial connection to a VELOS system

You can use either the supplied RJ45 to DB9 console port cable or the RJ45F to RJ45M rolled serial adapter to connect the system controllers to a serial console server.
  1. Connect the system controllers to a serial console server using one of these options:
    • Connect a RJ45 to DB9 console port cable supplied by F5 to the CONSOLE port on each system controller.
