About using PIM sparse mode
You can configure a BIG-IP® system non-default route domain to use the
Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) protocol sparse mode (SM), which is available with a
Multicast Routing Bundle license in addition to licensed ZebOS® dynamic
routing. This configuration provides an effective multicast solution for Wide Area Networks
(WANs) with sparsely distributed groups.
Interested listeners located downstream from a PIM router join a PIM sparse mode tree through a
join message, which is then sent from the listener's designated router toward a rendezvous point.
All routers in a PIM domain must map to a rendezvous point router, which acts as an information
exchange point for the routers.
F5 does not yet support BIG-IP system in
the role of a Rendezvous point for PIM sparse mode.
